Title: Wendigo
Post by: Naylor on January 03, 2011, 07:13:20 AM
this isnt probably ment for mayday, it should be moved if it is not, but i was wondering how would i know if a Wendigo was living nearby? I remember seeing it in someones thread and i looked it up in the monstropedia and I learned a great deal, but what has me completely freaked out  is that monstropedia said the Wendigo inhabits the forests of the Great Lakes, I happen to live a maybe a half a mile or less away from Lake Erie, i have no forests nearby but i have some woods that i enjoy walking in sometimes at night. I watch/read the news from time to time and theres been no mass murders, people missing in masses, ect. But something odd did happen to me one night i was walking my cat, im more of a dog person but my sister got one from her friend, anyways im walking down my street which is dark as hell no street lights when she randomly hiss's at something i cant see! I didnt her a growl back so i knew it wasnt a dog, so i did the smart thing ran like hell back to my house, Could it have been a Wendigo?

People would be disappearing in & around the woods at a higher than normal rate. Wendigos are tricky, one could be right next to you in the forest & you might never know it. Best thing is to not go into the woods alone, especially at night. The Wendigo in flesh was at one point human & is now consumed by the desire to consume human flesh. Most of the time there are no remains to be found other than blood from an attack. This is due in part to the Wendigo & in part to the nature of the food chain in the forest. Dead things get dragged away & bones get scattered. It's a native legend of the Algonquin tribe so if an area near you is now or was a home for this tribe it is possible there may be a Wendigo. I would advise against asking any tribe members about this unless you are very close to the person since it is not a pleasent topic among the Algonquin & is spoken of mostly in whispers to help keep the spirit away. Do some more research, see if you can find any charms, symbols, etc that could be effective at keeping a Wendigo off your property & always enter it's territory, the forest with respect & total awareness of your surroundings.

Question.  Have any fresh graves been desecrated recently?  How many missing persons have there been in your area over the past 6 months?  Have there been any unexplained attacks/assaults in your area over the past 6 months?  You can get this information from your local police department.  Are there any remote, uninhabited buildings/caves/ect in or near your community.  A ten mile radius is not out of the question.

Answer these questions and you will go a long way in understanding if there may be a Wedigo for you to fear.

P.S.  It may have been a spiritual entity that your cat was reacting to as animals are able to since things that we can not.  Where was the area that the reaction happened and what is the history behind said area?  So many possibilities, so many possible answers.  I will commend you on your reaction though.  When in doubt run.  It is not cowardice to do so for the person who flees an unknown situation will be able to examine and understand what happened, those who don't often enough do not have to worry about figuring anything out ever again.

He did tell us some of his family haunted (Is that a good word for it?) the house.

I am going to step in, and if I'm out of place please forgive, and say as a certified veterinary technician that a cat reacting oddly while walking down the street is most likely not paranormal. The cat is indoors most of the time I am guessing so any movement would be worth caution & investigation to a cat. In addition to their paranormal abilities cats also have much more heightened sense than humans. While you may not see anything, your cat may have caught a strange/upsetting smell, seen something move quickly like a leaf or a mouse, or heard an animal under a house or nearby that you simply couldn't see because of it's location. One of the few times I rely on animal evidence is when its inside the animal's home, a place where they know every smell, sound, site, better than we do.

It means you are thinking about this way too much.  Trust me when I say you are safe in your home.  Nothing to worry about when you are in bed.  Creatures such as this are smart.  They will not overtly advetise their presence for to do so would be detrimental to their survival.

Muerte is right. The Wendigo is a symbol of obsession, fear, & greed. Think of what makes a Wendigo. By having a dream about one it means you are obsessing over it. If it makes you feel better you can put up protection around your property to help keep it out. But as long as you keep thinking about it, you'll keep having these dreams. Wendigos survive by not being overtly visible. If they started breaking into houses & attacking the occupants they wouldn't be around much longer.

I agree with Muerte and Countess; you are dwelling a lot on this being a problem of Wendigos. Don't think too much about it or wish for it!

I think you're suffering a Pandora's Box syndrome, haha. Although it won't kill you to think about it, you need to not dwell on it.

It's a matter of will power. When you notice yourself starting to think about it, simply tell yourself "No!" out loud if needed, then start doing something else. It won't be easy but you can train yourself not to. It is similar to how almost all little kids can see spirits but once they reach a certain age some stop, it's because they have been told repeatedly that it doesn't exist & eventually their mind says "ok, I don't see it"

A Wendigo might be killed with anything, although they recover more slowly when silver is involved.
Emphasis on the "might" because some say you can't kill one.

An incorporeal being which can be manifested through hate and pain and all negative emotions really, can not be destroyed by a human. Any incorporeal being can not be destroyed by a corporeal being. However, the process of making our selves truly incorporeal is impossible, so therefore an incorporeal being can not ever be truly destroyed... yet...

I have a feeling I'm going to get told otherwise... >_>

im not actually talking about 1 being destroying another, i said that anything can be destroyed if it has been made.  You may be right that an incorporeal being cant be destroyed by a human, but u can bet your ass that there is something that may not be human that could destroy it, or it could even destroy itself it it chose to. the point is, it still CAN be destroyed...

I think you mean to say anything can be undone. I wouldn't say that "destroyed" is the right word.

We will use Wikpidia to assist us in this discussion.  While I understand it is not a viable scientific tool it will help point in the right direction.

No, it's not nitpicking, it's making a point. Words can change entire meanings. In this community, you have to use the right words. Additionally, if everyone is telling you something, chances are it's because they know what they're talking about. So don't keep pushing it. Destroyed, undone - yes, there is a difference between the two. Research them and get the point.

Brendon I ask respectfully that you read the Link I have provided to you about the creation/destruction of matter.  Once you have done this I would then like you to give your interpretation on the subject text.  Thanks in advance.
