Title: The construction and activation of a golem...
Post by: WeeFolkMan on August 23, 2006, 02:21:48 PM
Anybody know how to do it?

Theoretically, it is very simple.
Stage 1: Complete a rigorous program encompassing Jewish law and responsa. Learn the Talmud, Rishonim and Acharonim, the Shulkhan Arukh (codified Jewish law) and its main commentaries, eventually becoming ordained as a Rabbi. (This may take a while.)
Stage 2: Create your man shaped creature out of mud and clay.
Stage 3: Inscribe a clay tablet with אהיה אשר אהיה and place it under its tongue
Stage 4: Inscribe its forehead with אמת
Stage 5: Recite the following following document in its entireity without error: DOCUMENT HERE (http://kabbalah.info/hebkab/yetzirah.htm)

Hey presto! One golem ready to do your bidding until deactivated.

(That last bit is quite important - make sure you know how to deactivate it QUICKLY - they can be quite... troublesome.)

Thanks viper, I heard that you can activate by putting one of the names of god on its forehead. :|
Guess not, but I hear that the drawbacks to using these things are that they may turn on you if you dont do the spell exactly right, and they will kill anybody that gets in the way of their masters orders.
I think I may wait to try to make one of these buggers.

Think I could make one out of store bought clay? Like play doh or some other brand like that? I dunno about any clay deposits near my house.

why would you want to?

what would be the point of having some clay man running around, mindlessly entertaining you, not to mention if the secret ever got out...people would be paying you for the secret, the controversy that would ensue, the proof of magic working that several people have offered money for...if fame and fortune is your goal, i guess i can understand.

what else would it be used for?

2 things...
1. I live out in the country so nobody would rly know about it..
2. No, I dont want fame or fortune, I want the exsperience of it, thats why I would want to make a small one first, to see if it would be a good idea or not before I make one bigger than me that could destroy me and my farm. Or it could be a good help on the farm if I can control it...
And i wouldnt let the secret get out either! If the thing ever got bigger than 7 ft tall I would deactivate it and build a new one!
So once again I ask my question, have any of YOU ever made one, and can I just make a small one to start.

The instructions I gave above were fairly specific. You obviously missed the significance of stage 1....

When constructing one's golem, naturally the purity of the materials is important, but not as critical as the purity of purpose of those who would explore the secrets of golem creation. This is because the creation of a golem can be dangerous to the creator. Therefore, achieving stage 1 demonstrates the purity of purpose with which the task must be approached. A golem cannot be created for the purpose of evil (not being human, any sin the golem commits is a sin of the creator, not the creation) and must be created with a pure purpose in mind. Furthermore, solo attempts at golem creation call into question the practitioner's purity of purpose and, inevitably, bring harm to that person. It is also dangerous to use a golem for simple, mundane tasks.

Creating a golem just for the heck of it is never to be entertained; indeed, we are told in the Hayyei ha-'Olam ha-Ba' that those who pursue "...the lore of the name in order to operate thereby corporeal issues... even if he express by his mouth or things in his heart that he recites the name for the glory of G-d, it is not so and... this man is wicked and a sinner, who defiles the name of G-d."

It would seem that you are not yet ready to share in the secrets of the SY...  :|

I am a person of christian faith, but it still interested me, I have no intent for evil, and I relise that purity of purpose is escential for many things.
The only reason that I was going to try to make one solo is because other people may consider me a lil crazy.
But perhaps your right, i may not be ready for something like a golem yet.
