A law to eradicate Black Magic?

Loki:
India State wants law to remove ‘aghori’ practices but sections of society oppose it in the name of personal liberty, religion ...

jordyn:
generally, i have to say it's a good idea, but it does seem to have some loopholes for abuse by less than honest law officials and personal vendettas.

"The vigilance officer will have power to enter and search  at all reasonable times with the help of local police any place in which he has reason to believe that an offence under  this act has been or is being committed.
Vigilance officer can seize any material, instruments or advertisements and can examine any records, documents or other material object found in any place and seize any material as evidence."

it could easily turn into the satanist hunts that we had around the mid eighties...how many lives were ruined by accusations of ritual satanic abuse...that were not true or the salem witch trials...how many innocent people were destroyed by those laws?

they can't enforce law over other situations like bride burnings, abuse of women's rights and other cultural practices, how will this be any different?

The_Seeker:
Though I am not familiar with Indian law, it does seem to infringe on people's beliefs.  From what the article reports, it seems participants in these activities do so voluntarily.

Also as jordyn pointed out, the numerous loopholes in the act could easily and legally be abused to horrible effects.

But by that argument, should we allow Christians to stone witches? After all, to deny them the act that the Bible commands is "impinging on their beliefs"...

It should also be remembered, jordyn, that while concerns about the occult might seem more in keeping with religious conservatism, especially coming from the USA, in fact the "satanic abuse" witch hunts in the USA were a feminist, left-wing cause... What exactly is the opposite of misogynism, btw? Misandry. At the root of all of the USA cases, you'll find that little unspoken word...
