Ministers are preparing to publish a "harrowing" report on abuse meted out to African children in Britain branded as witches.

The highly sensitive inquiry was ordered, after a string of cases in which children were alleged to have been beaten in exorcism rituals.

Some suspect that there may have been as many as 50 such cases in London in the past five years, but the exact figures will be revealed in an official report to be published in the next two weeks.

It is expected to detail abusive practices, such as slashing with razors, starving and rubbing chilli peppers into children's eyes.

Attention focused on witchcraft rituals after the discovery of "Adam", an unknown African boy whose torso was found in the Thames in 2001. A Metropolitan Police investigation found that hundreds of children visiting Britain from Africa could not be accounted for.

Publication of the research by Eleanor Stobart was delayed, however, amid fears that it would damage race relations. African church leaders fear the findings will unfairly stigmatise the majority.

Boys from Africa are being murdered as human sacrif ices in London churches.

They are brought into the capital to be offered up in rituals by fundamentalist Christian sects, according to a shocking report by Scotland Yard.

Followers believe that powerful spells require the deaths of "unblemished" male children.

Police believe such boys are trafficked from cities such as Kinshasa where they can be bought for a little as £10.

The report, leaked ahead of its publication next month, also cites examples of

African children being tortured and killed after being identified as "witches" by church pastors.

The 10-month study was commissioned after the death of Victoria Climbié, who was starved and beaten to death after they said she was possessed by the devil.

Police fear for children abused by religious sects
By Stewart Tendler and Nicola Woolcock
The Times December 12, 2005

DOZENS of children are being abused by religious groups who believe they are possessed, The Times has learnt.

Nineteen children have been rescued by police and social workers from beatings and mental abuse by church members, and senior officers fear many cases are still going unreported. The children's plight was uncovered in a drive against "faith-based ritual abuse". A report by Scotland Yard's child abuse specialists shows that 12 cases involving 19 children were recorded by police in London between May and October.

Although police say most of the cases involve minor injuries, they include beatings, actual bodily harm and neglect involving starving children, abandoning or ignoring them. Many revolve around practices in black African churches.

The cases were uncovered after Scotland Yard, social services agencies and government departments began a campaign to halt the "deliverance rituals" and beliefs within some churches aimed at exorcising children denounced as witches. These rituals are not only condoned but encouraged by many churches, whose pastors are often the ones to denounce young worshippers as witches. The unshakable belief in ndoki (witchcraft) has become a tenet of certain evangelical churches.

Crucified nun dies in 'exorcism'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4107524.stm

Father Daniel says the nun's death was justified

A Romanian nun has died after being bound to a cross, gagged and left alone for three days in a cold room in a convent, Romanian police have said.

Members of the convent in north-west Romania claim Maricica Irina Cornici was possessed and that the crucifixion had been part of an exorcism ritual.

Cornici was found dead on the cross on Wednesday after fellow nuns called an ambulance, according to police.

A priest and four nuns were charged with imprisonment leading to death.

Orphan

Police say the 23-year-old nun, who was denied food and drink throughout her ordeal, had been tied and chained to the cross and a towel pushed into her mouth to smother any sounds.

A post-mortem is to be carried out, although initial reports say that Cornici died from asphyxiation.
