An historic house where Mary, Queen of Scots almost died is at the centre of an investigation by a team of ghostbusters. The atmosphere at the 500-year-old stone mansion in the Scottish Borders has spooked numerous visitors who have reported strange smells and sounds. Members of Midlothian Paranormal Investigations (MPI) will visit Mary Queen of Scots House, in Jedburgh, on June 30 and spend the night trying to get to the bottom of the mystery. The investigation will centre on the bedroom where Mary is known to have slept in 1566 on a visit during which she caught a near- fatal fever.

The house contains historic artefacts relating to Mary, including her death mask, made after she was beheaded for treason in 1587. Shona Sinclair, who has worked at the museum for 14 years, said: "Visitors to the museum have reported smelling a flowery scent in Mary's bedroom. Some have felt very scared, even running out of the museum because they could sense somebody in the room." She added: "I'm not a great believer in ghosts, but I have smelt the scent, and heard rustling sounds."

MPI's lco-founder, Mark Stocks, said he had an open mind. He said: "We have no idea what to expect."

The team - including a medium - will use digital voice recorders, infrared cameras and magnetic field detectors to investigate the house.
