Title: Manned Mars Mission - Dry-Run in 2007
Post by: Devious Viper on June 16, 2006, 04:23:13 AM
An experiment simulating a crewed flight to Mars will begin in 2007, Anatoly Grigoriev, the head of the Medical and Biological Problems Institution of the Russian Academy of Sciences is quoted by Interfax as saying.

“The experiment on simulating the conditions of a crewed flight to Mars is planned to be held in 2007. The Energia aerospace corporation and the Russian State Scientific-Research and Cosmonaut Training Test Center actively backed the plans. A number of foreign countries are interested in it,” he said at the 13th conference on space biology and space medicine that started on Tuesday in Moscow.

He added that the crew of six research pilots, volunteers, would likely to be international.

During the experimental flight the work of life-preserving devices and the psychological effects of confinement in the spacecraft as well as research into new ways and means of providing medical assistance to the crew will be tested, the scientist said.

I've thought quite a bit about the psyc effects of space travel.  There are no perfect models of what it would be like but you san see a connection with prison, Antarctic exploration, and extended space station assignments.  I think the psyc effects will be minimal.

The physical effects are another matter.  After an extended time in the space station, astronauts have had significant muscle loss and bone weakness.  I think that a couple year journey will kill or seriously weaken the crew before they reach the destination.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the skeleton de-mineralises at a very rapid rate in a weightless environment. You recall those shots of the cosmonauts who'd been trapped on Soyuz for longer than planned? They had to be carried out of the capsule like invalids. I don't doubt for a moment that in labs and research facilities hidden away somewhere they aren't working on genetically engineering a solution...

One would wonder though if the problem couldn't be solved with a simple application of simulated gravity, via centrifugal force...

or perhaps a combination of that and mineral suppliments and exercise regiments

I assumed they already took suppliments during extended missions. Exercise is a very good point though. They could use resistance bands...heck, they could even use electrical stimulation of the muscles, like they do with coma patients.
