A man was convicted of first-degree murder for the strangulation death of his girlfriend.

Christopher Wheeler, 22, was convicted Wednesday of strangling Shelly Razor-Markwell early on July 28, 2003, at her Hiawatha apartment. Wheeler placed her body on the floor and fled, leaving Razor-Markwell's children to find it, according to testimony during the six-day trial.

Wheeler told psychiatrists he had consumed an eighth-ounce of methamphetamine, three ounces of marijuana and a half-gallon of gin the night he strangled Razor-Markwell. He admitted killing her but said he had been directed by alien voices, according to testimony.

Wheeler had been seeking treatment because "someone was messing with his head" in the four months before Razor-Markwell's death, according to the testimony of his treating psychiatrists.

Wheeler's attorneys asked the jury to find Wheeler not guilty by reason of insanity.

Judge L. Vern Robinson set a Nov. 16 sentencing date for Wheeler. A life sentence is required by law.
