Just thinking out loud: as we are all attending a forum about Monsters I assume we share the same interest in monstrous readings. How did you approach monsters or the dark side of things?
My initiation was when I was 10 and my sister gave me an Edgar Allan Poe's book with the very best of his short novels.
I have been obsessed with The Black Cat ever since.

Great topic Angel.. Edgar Allan Poe was part of it for me at an early age as well. I remember reading Stephen King's 'Pet Sematary' at recess in the 4th grade for a few weeks. Remember watching 'CreepShow' when I was in 2nd grade, 'Cat'sEye', and other King movie adaptations. Always liked to stay up late when i was in grade school, watching horror movies. Got into the EC 'Tales from the Crypt' comics at a very early age, and related material from DC and Marvel in their 70's horror line-up..
H.P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker, Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock and classic films from the 30's-90's, have given me just as much entertainment value and food for thought as any comedy or drama or romance i've ever seen or read..
I think it's kinda like the 'comic book' stigma.. Like horror movies, they've gotten a bad reputation over the decades as junk-food for the mind that is without merit in society.. But as we are finding there are definitely many valuable messages and morals in some horror films, as well as an artistic flair for design and innovation.. It is FILM-MAKING and deserves to be taken as seriously as anything else..
When was the last time a 'horror' film got any recognition at the Academy awards? 'Silence of the Lambs?'
When was the last time a comic book movie got nominated for anything? Never? (Maybe the old Superman films)
A lot of kids get into horror cinema at that age, i think i just grew to appreciate the artistic value of some of it, and the emotions that it can bring forth from the viewer. The horror film has a place in our culture, if only real life were not all the moreso horrible.... :gun:

Also, i'd have to say that people like Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce tie into this interest as well at a very early age. UFO accounts, ghosts, psychic phenomena, and topics like Biblical prophecy all have interested me since grade school. That's when i really began researching it all, though much more seriously in recent years...

I started to read seriously at 16 and they were all horror novels. Why horror, because I was raised to love horror. I was allowed to watch horror flicks at 4, the bedtime stories were about monsters, people who were looking for their heads and trying different ones, ghosts and skeletons, my grandpa would talk to me about strange creatures and Halloween was more important than Christmas! I come from a very strange family...
So it was natural for me to pick horror books! :wink:

For me it was unnatural (meaning forbidden), that's why I chose them :-D
But which authors you consider your first love, horror-wise?

The fact that I've been checking his name out on my books before replying tells how confident I'm feeling :?
I adore him, looking forward to see the third part of the Frankenstein trilogy, which I suppose is scheduled for 2007 (another year to go!)
